First off, I want to say I love you guys! I just happened upon your site and info while perusing an article on CNN about “Growing Up Bipolar”, and when I got to your video, watched it and laughed – my 7 year old daughter hasn’t yet been diagnosed with anything yet, but I’m almost positive she has something, as my family is so totally mental (we have depression, bipolar, some hoarding, etc.). I laughed because I have always tried to tell my daughter that we’re not perfect (go listen to The Laurie Berkner Band’s “I’m Not Perfect”) ever since she was little… and I know we are definitely not! But in some ways she is almost perfect! She’s sweet and loving when she wants to be (when she’s not in “NO” Land), can be wonderful in gymnastics (when she tries hard), and when she focuses on her school work, she can be excellent (when she wants to do it)! But it takes just that, work… and I have pulled out my hair trying to get her to do things (read: gone nuts)… like, help me – just a little bit – around the house… clean her room… pick up stuff from the floor… comb her own hair… just plain listen! She’s also given me plenty of trials… The evil stares, the eyes rolling up and back into her head… Only when she’s possessed, mind you! Well, it’s, you know, the big and little things too… But every day brings something new… new challenges, new changes… and she has learned new ways of being, and so have I. We keep trying to improve, but being imperfect, well, you know how that goes. (I am trying to fix my many typos as I type!)
I intend to run out and get your books, so I can learn that I am not alone in being imperfect. So Thank you both so much for fighting for the cause! And you are both so funny as well! I AM AN IMPERFECT MOTHER TOO!!! Sincerely, Ellen M. Dockery
